Why Change?

Hey guys!!
So I was thinking the other day and a question popped into my head, and I was wondering what your opinion was. So here's the question, If God loves us just the way we are why are we always working on to change who we are??? God is the only one that matters so why are we constantly trying to change that??
So what do you guys think??

We have grown up in a world fascinated with fame and popularity. So much so as to pollute our minds and place God in the background as someone we sub-consciencely know will love us anyway, so therefore we try to reach that point of just being 'known' by others and get so caught up in THAT that we think maybe we can have God AND the world love us.

Thats just my 2 cents...

Being a dad helps me understand how it is that God loves me completely yet still wants me to change. When your kids are hurting themselves and others by their actions and attitudes (not that ours ever do, ahem!), you want them to change because you love them.

I John 3:2-3 says, "Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure."

So instead of saying, "Hey, one day I'm going to be perfect so why change now?" we say, "I'm so looking forward to being like Jesus that every part of me strives for that here and now." It's like changing into your snowboard gear as the car approaches the mountain, because you just can't wait.

I definetly agree with both Derkson and Jim on this one (love the snowboard gear analogy, it would be better if you were changing into your ski gear though=P) Another side to this is changing for the bad...making yourself or others into something they're not, making servants into celebraties. I listened to a sermon online last night that was about that and I highly recommend it, it's worth it cause it's really really good. http://www.libertyu.com/index.cfm?PID=11961 click on "Under The Rug" icon on the right side and then the sermon is "Celebreality Break" ok so maybe a little different from Sheri's question but it's still about change and changing so that others see us differently or we see ourselves as more important aka not the servants we're called to be... Totally amazing sermon that I got a lot out of so check it out!

So I guess the real question is, are we going to church, or serving God, just so that others will that that we are great, or are we doing it for God. God loves us JUST THE WAY WE ARE, WE DON'T NEED TO CHANGE AND IF WE DO WE NEED TO DO IT FOR GOD NOT SO THAT OTHERS WILL THINK THAT WE ARE 'A GOOD CHRISTIAN' I have to go with Chris on this one, check out the sermon and ask your self Is your faith in God or in people....

such an awesome sermon...anyone else listen to it?? I think also that maybe there's circumstances where we're not always doing it totally for God or totally for people, we kinda have to keep a check on ourselves. Like personally for me playing on lots of worship teams it's easy to get into the "I'm in the band" mindset instead of focusing on humbly worship God with an instrument, and leading people in worship...so I think it's something we have to be checking on, and not only that but who our faith is it....guess that's life though, always learning and growing all the time!!!

Perhaps it would be better to say that it depends on who wants you to change. If we want to change, that would be wrong... but if God wants us to change, then we'd better be ready to hold on! I do believe that, when we are open and willing, Christ will convict us of that which needs changing in our lives. There's my couple thoughts.

My opinion is that God loves us for WHO we are, not necessarliy "the way we are". We all have areas in our lives that need to be changed for the glory of God. Yes there are also things that we change about ourselves to fit in.... but honestly I don't think that we will ever stop changing, and when I say changing I mean growing. Maturity I think really gets thrown into the changing yourself. But like for me I really found that as I am maturing, I don't find certain things funny anymore or I don't act the same way that I did two years ago. And it's not that I have changed myself for other people. I have just grown up. I really don't think we will ever stop constantly changing ourselves, and truthfully I don't think it would be a good thing to stop changing. Our world is always changing, the situations in our lives are constantly changing and as a result so are we. But let's always remember that God never changes, but wants to make changes in us, so that we can be like Jesus one day, Carpenter and all!
